During his time in the planning team, Cameron spent time with each of our experienced planners to get a better understanding of the role and how to best progress.

While working with the Commercial team, Cameron originally built his knowledge in solution design for new and existing customers, gaining an understanding of what each customer wants and how Suttons can add value for them.  He has recently been promoted into a Business Development Executive, where he will maintain responsibility for the solution design analysis until he has fully transitioned into the new role which will have a much heavier focus on developing new business opportunities.

Throughout his graduate scheme, Cameron had a departmental mentor, as well as regular catch ups with CEO, John Sutton, who took on the role as his wider business mentor throughout the second half of his programme. The mentoring process was a key factor in assisting Cameron’s progression. Nigel Gilhooley, Commercial Manager, Billy Bamin, Head of Commercial Finance, and Roger Parr, Commercial Director, were committed to devoting time and effort into ensuring Cameron understood each and every part of the business so that he could conduct his role with the knowledge required to complete everything to the highest possible standard.

The support from the team came in many different ways. With certain members of the team having worked with Suttons for over 20 years, Cameron received advice based on past experiences and benefitted from the team’s ability to demonstrate how the industry has evolved over the years. The Commercial team also supported Cameron’s development in line with the Suttons core values, which involved activity outside of the day-to-day.

While the Commercial team develop effective, bespoke solutions for all its customers, Cameron took advantage of developing his knowledge of commercial mechanisms and solution design. He has developed expert knowledge in Paragon planning software from having no prior experience, and this has undoubtedly been a driving force behind major new business wins and customer satisfaction.

Cameron’s best piece of advice to any graduate looking to embark on the scheme would be to ask as many questions as you can. Take advantage of the experienced team around you and constantly seek to learn more about the business, industry and various sectors we operate in.
