As a Driver Trainer, what factors do you think makes a driver the best they can be?

Without a doubt, health, safety and compliance is the most important element in being a driver. I always tell my drivers that it does not matter where you are or what you’re doing, you should never rush to get anything done. Attention to detail is key and if a driver is not concentrating on the job in hand, they are putting themselves and potentially the public at risk. It is a really important job and they are our brand ambassadors.

How would you describe your coaching style as a Driver Trainer?

Having been a Class 1 driver for over 20 years, I put myself in the drivers’ shoes and use my own experiences as ways to coach the team. I truly believe in the phrase ‘every day is a school day’ and ensure that the drivers on the Yorkshire Water contract are always learning and developing their skills. I adopt a continuous improvement approach to training drivers, ensuring that we all learn from shared experiences and constantly refresh our knowledge of the health and safety principles.

What is your core message to drivers?

Keep safety at the forefront of everything you do. If something does not feel safe, do not proceed. Never take a risk.

What do you enjoy most about working for Suttons?

Being a Driver Trainer is a really rewarding job: the drivers are delivering a product that is essential so they feel a great level of responsibility for what they are doing. It’s great to be part of a global company that put such an emphasis on the importance of its drivers and invest heavily in its fleet and equipment.
