When Suttons Tankers entered the Waste Sector in 2019 it was a bold new step for the business. While the logistics provider has over 100 years experience, most of those have seen Suttons moving hazardous chemicals, so the waste sector was a whole new venture.
Cultivation of a strong team
Over the last 4 years, Suttons have continued to develop a strong team focused on bringing the exceptional value we are known for to the waste sector. The team is headed up by industry expert Simon Williams, backed up by its national network of over 69 locations across the UK and experienced personnel. Coupled with a willingness to invest in fleet and assets, the team brings a unique combination of excellent levels of safety, compliance and added value to customers in the waste sector.
Simon joined the Suttons Tankers Commercial team in 2022. With a career spanning all areas of the waste supply chain over the past 25 years, from driver to management, he is truly an expert in his field. He brings well developed expertise to bolster Suttons Tankers’ offering to our existing waste sector customers, while aiding in further developing the business growth in the sector in line with its strategy.
Suttons have recently appointed a new Safety Manager in the Waste sector. The new role was created at no extra cost to its customers and the Safety Manager will operate exclusively on waste contracts.
They will be responsible for ensuring the operation, and Suttons’ customers’ sites, are operating at the highest levels of safety and compliance. The Safety Manager will conduct site visits, risk assessments, and most importantly develop a waste sector focused safety culture within the business which will continuously bring value to customers within the sector.
Ability to flex up and meet demand
The large scale of the Suttons Tankers business sets it apart from its competitors. With 69 strategically chosen locations across the UK, Suttons are where its customers need them. The vast fleet also means that Suttons are able to respond quickly and flex up to meet demand. Being a DVSA Earned Recognition operator also gives reassurance to its customers that the levels of compliance are at its highest.
Investment in the fleet
In addition to extremely high levels of safety and compliance, Suttons Tankers has a strong policy of continuous investment. In 2022 alone Suttons added 60 brand new top of the range Volvo FH tractor units in direct response to driver feedback. These new tractor units have not only seen an improvement in driver comfort as they are better suited to long distance and overnight journeys, but come with a suite of safety features and environmental benefits too.
Suttons’ waste customers benefit from this in numerous ways. Having the appetite and capital to invest in dedicated fleets for customer contracts is something that sets Suttons apart. In 2022/2023 they added a further 14 new vacuum tanks for the waste sector, building on the 18 vacuum tankers purchased between 2021/2022.
Fleet investment brings the customer greater efficiency due to the reduced down time between collections and lower maintenance costs as there is less strain on the fleet thanks to the shared load.
Danny Pollington, Transport Operations Manager, Severn Trent Green Power, commented on the value Suttons brings to waste customers:
“Simon has always offered the best possible service to Severn Trent Green Power and our reciprocal business relationship gives us a major strategical differential between us and other suppliers/customers.
“Suttons Tankers have a very unique position within the Waste Logistics Sector in that their multiple depots across the UK allow them to not only be commercially competitive but also means they can offer an extremely reliable service as they always have a location close to any collection or delivery point we require. I am sure our continued relationship will not only benefit both of our businesses but also our customers and suppliers for many years to come”.
Through a combination of factors unique to Suttons Tankers, such as: a large depot network, a peerless compliance and safety culture, and a hunger for growth and investment, the waste sector has become a core pillar of the business’s strategic goals. The business are keen to bring the same added value, bespoke solution design, and spotless safety record that customers in other sectors receive to new and existing waste customers.
