When you work in an industry that generates liquid waste products, it’s a legal requirement to dispose of this waste safely and sustainably.
Rather than spending time and resources dealing with this in-house, it’s easier and more cost-effective to work alongside a trusted waste logistics provider – like Suttons Tankers.
Whether you’re new to the concept of bulk liquid waste logistics or are looking for a new haulier to work with, this article will provide the information you need.
What is waste logistics?
Waste logistics refers to the movement of waste products (like sewage, waste water, or foodstuffs) from one destination to another.
For example, from your factory or an industrial site to disposal points where the waste can be dealt with safely.
What happens to my waste when it reaches its destination?
What happens to your waste once it has been disposed of will depend on the type of waste. An exceptional waste logistics provider will ensure that waste products are recycled and repurposed wherever possible.
For example, if you have waste oil, it can be processed into fuel. Some liquid waste contains sodium, nitrogen, and potassium, which can be turned into fertiliser.
If your waste cannot be recycled, it will be treated so it can be disposed of safely. Liquid waste can’t be sent to landfill because it could soak into the ground or come into contact with water sources, resulting in pollution and environmental damage. As a result, liquids and solids are often separated.
Do you need any accreditations to carry waste?
If you transport waste from one destination to another, you must register with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier. If you can’t provide a registration certificate when asked, you could be liable for an unlimited fine.
If you use an external provider to handle your waste logistics, it’s essential to check that they are licensed. Some unlicensed companies use illegal methods to get rid of waste, for example, fly-tipping or dumping waste into waterways.
We’re registered as a waste carrier, giving you peace of mind that your waste will be handled correctly and in line with government regulations. We keep complete records of all waste transfers and provide the paperwork you need to show that your waste has been disposed of correctly.
How are waste products transported?
It depends on the type of waste you need to dispose of, as well as the volume. If you have large quantities of liquid waste, a tanker is the easiest and most efficient way to handle your waste.
A liquid waste tanker is a large aluminium or stainless steel tanker that can hold up to 30,000 litres of waste. Most tankers operate using a vacuum and pump system so they can be quickly loaded and unloaded.
These tankers differ from those used to transport other products like fuel or chemicals. Liquid waste tankers feature domed ends to withstand large amounts of pressure without damage. This means they can be filled and emptied without leaking or exploding.
Our tanks are cleaned and inspected after use, with thorough testing every 2.5 years. All waste tankers are also equipped with a tracking device, so we know their location at any given time.
I want to change waste logistics providers but am worried about the paperwork. What can I do?
In this scenario, it’s important to work with a waste logistics provider with an understanding of change management and Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment), or TUPE.
We have extensive experience of both. Whether you’re using an in-house fleet or another haulier, we can work effectively with your current provider until it’s time to change.
This means less admin and paperwork for you and your team.
