Empowering Women in the ISO Tank Logistics Industry: Suttons International’s Commitment to Gender Equality

The global ISO tank logistics industry, which plays pivotal role in the international supply chain and movements of liquids, chemicals, and gases has long been characterized by a gender disparity. Historically, this industry has been dominated by men, with few opportunities for women to break through the glass ceiling.

A recent report by McKinsey & Company revealed that women hold only 20% of executive positions globally across all industries, highlighting a broader trend of underrepresentation in leadership roles that extends to transportation and logistics. The International Labour Organization (ILO) reports that women constitute only around 22% of the transportation and storage sector’s global workforce, reflecting a persistent underrepresentation in key operational roles. Moreover, despite the industry’s reliance on skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), women remain underrepresented in these fields, comprising only around 28% of the STEM workforce globally.

These statistics underscore the systemic challenges women encounter in pursuing careers in transportation and logistics, including the ISO tank industry. Stereotypes, limited mentorship opportunities, and insufficient support for achieving work-life balance are among the perceived barriers inhibiting women’s participation and advancement in our industry.

At Suttons International we are breaking this trend and have begun to engage in strategies such as mentorship, support networks, and advocacy to empower to women in our business to fulfil their career potential, our current organisation is comprised of 52% females and 28% are at the senior leadership and executive level.
