The Importance of Partnership in Chemical Logistics: A Conversation with Paul Blakeston

“I’m a huge believer in building relationships that go beyond business,” says Paul Blakeston, Head of Chemicals at Schenk UK. “It’s about understanding more than just the business side of our customers, to build real connections with people.”

When Schenk UK joined the broader Schenk Transport network, Paul saw an opportunity to further strengthen these relationships. “The acquisition has enabled us to expand our service portfolio significantly. With our enhanced capabilities through Schenk Transport’s continental and intermodal expertise, we can now offer complete end-to-end logistics solutions. This is particularly valuable for customers with both UK domestic and international transport requirements, creating new opportunities for integrated services.”

This integrated approach reflects Paul’s philosophy about offering a premium service that goes beyond simply transporting a customers’ products from A to B. “We focus on delivering premium quality service rather than competing solely on price,” he explains. “It’s about understanding our customers’ needs, understanding their challenges, and always striving to find the most sustainable solution for their logistics needs. It has to be a partnership.”

Schenk UK continuously works to align its services with the specific requirements of chemical suppliers. “For example, we’ve invested in multi-compartment tankers to enhance flexibility in solvent transport,” Paul explains. “Recognizing the importance of specialist assets, we ensure our fleet is fully equipped to meet industry demands while maintaining the highest safety and compliance standards.”

Maintaining consistent standards across operations is crucial. “In the UK, we operate under strict DVSA testing requirements, with frequent preventative maintenance services scheduled every 6-8 weeks,” Paul explains. “While European regulations vary by country, we ensure all movements comply with the highest ADR regulations and ISO standards. Through harmonized safety procedures and standardized training, we maintain high service quality whether deliveries stay in the UK or cross borders.”

The chemical sector’s collaborative spirit facilitates a continual focus on safety standards and service levels. Through the Solvent Industry Association (SIA), of which Schenk UK is a member, affiliated companies work together to promote and share best practice, and to create a safe and sustainable supply chain within the Solvent industry. “When you’re in a room with 30-something representatives of these companies, the level of mutual support is remarkable,” Paul observes. “The members tackle everything from manufacturing, storage and distribution of Chemical Solvents and as equally important ESG challenges and sustainability, always respecting clear guidelines about what can and cannot be discussed in this environment.”

Looking ahead, Paul sees integrated domestic and intermodal capabilities as crucial for the industry’s development. “Energy prices, legislative changes, and plant operation & maintenance costs are driving UK customers to make new decisions about sourcing products,” he notes. “With expansive international supply chains, they’re actively seeking cost-effective solutions. Schenk UK’s partnership approach means that we can actively support customers with the changing dynamics of the chemical sector all the while operating the safest and most efficient equipment in the market.”

For Paul, this combination of premium service and expanded capabilities strengthens customer relationships. “It’s truly about working with the customer to support their business,” he emphasizes. “That has been a big part of our success.”
